The Five Best Scents for Showing a Home

There’s nothing like walking into a home and being bombarded by the odors of soured laundry, last night’s Mexican, and your husband’s dirty gym shoes. Nix these odors by using these best scents for home showings at your next open house!

Best Scents for Home Showings

The Williams Sonoma Scent

If you’ve ever walked through Williams Sonoma, you know exactly what I mean. It’s a citrusy “spring is here!” kind of scent that makes shopping for pots and pans luxurious. There are countless recipe hacks online, like these, that give you the ingredients for this springtime scent that is perfect for home showing. The basic ingredients are lemon, rosemary and lavender. Just add water and simmer them on the stovetop or in a crockpot for a scent that delicately lingers.

Christmas Scent

Scented pinecones which can also act as Christmas decor are great for adding a subtle hint of cinnamon to the air. Buy them at the store or make your own using this tutorial. Any combination of cinnamon, peppermint and pine makes for a very lovely Christmas blend. This, too, can be simmered on the stovetop or in a crockpot. If your showing lines up with the holiday season, add scented ornaments to your tree or make scented garland to provide a lingering Christmas fragrance for your prospective buyers.

Cookies or Fresh Bread

Whether it’s cookies or bread, the fresh scent of baked goods just coming out of the oven is another great home-showing scent. Offering samples to your visitors is an excellent added touch. Be careful to do this only if you have the time and ability to be successful. The fragrance of fresh baked bread is lovely; the smell of burnt, well, anything is not pleasant at all.

Fresh Linen/Laundry

Who doesn’t love the scent of freshly laundered clothing? Just before a showing, run a load of laundry through the washer and dryer and use a linen or fresh scent fabric softener and/or dryer sheets. Carry the fresh laundry scent into your bedrooms by changing the bedsheets just before the prospective buyers arrive. You can even tuck a dryer sheet under the pillows for added effect. Carry the fresh scent in to your bathroom by hanging eucalyptus in the shower.

Coffee

You have to be careful with this one as coffee can be an abrasive scent to some but for many, nothing says “home” like the light fragrance of a cuppa joe. Provide a subtle hint of coffee using coffee beans in bowls under vanilla flavored votives. The heat from the candles mixed with the fragrance of the coffee makes for a lovely vanilla latte scent. You can also heat a pan of vanilla extract in the oven for 20 minutes to accomplish a similar fragrance. Coffee grains also great for removing unwanted odors like the aforementioned gym shoes.
