10 DIY Home Decor Projects

Decorating your home can be fun and rewarding. It can also get expensive quickly. Here are 10 DIY home decor projects you can tackle that won’t break the bank.

10 DIY Home Decor Projects

Picture Frame Dry Erase Board

Here’s a fun and very inexpensive way to add a little decorative flair to your kitchen or office area with a DIY dry erase board. You’ll need a picture frame, scrapbook paper cut to fit the frame, and a dry erase marker. Simply place the scrapbook paper inside the frame as you would do a picture. Write on the glass of the picture frame with the marker. You can make grocery lists or leave notes for family members or jot down things you want to remember. Simply wipe with a napkin to erase. When you get bored with the design, change out the paper!

Bunting Garland

Bunting can be a great way to brighten up a fireplace or a bare wall. Simply grab some twine, scissors and fabric scraps. Either tie or string the fabric through the twine and hang from your mantle. Check out this post for inspiration!

Chipboard Letters

Chipboard letters are relatively inexpensive and can be used for wall decor or placed on shelves for depth. For example, you can purchase the letters, E-A-T, at a hobby store and paint them or decoupage them using scrapbook paper. Place them above your kitchen cabinets or mount to the wall for a visually interesting piece that costs less the $10 to make!

Blanket Ladder

There’s nothing like snuggling under a blanket near a blazing fire. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a place to store those blankets when they are not in use? Check out this tutorial on how to a make a blanket ladder for under $5!

Canvases

For this project you’ll need a canvas, a picture cut to the size of the canvas, and decoupage glue. Start by placing a generous but even layer of glue on the canvas. Then place the picture on top and smooth to the edges. Add another layer of glue to the top of the picture taking care to seal the edges well and allow it to dry. For added depth, you can paint the edges of the canvas. You now have beautiful art without the cost of a professional canvas!

Chicken Wire Bulletin Boards

This DIY requires chicken wire, wire cutters, an open frame, and a staple gun. Using the wire cutters, cut the chicken wire to just slightly larger than the opening of the frame. Place the open frame front side down and stretch the chicken wire across the frame. Secure it on all sides using the staple gun. Take clothespins and add pictures or mementos to make a beautiful and unique wall hanging.

String Art

This is a fun but tedious DIY project. It will require wood, string, and a hammer and nails. Using the hammer and nails, create a word or image on the wood. Then take the string and wrap the material around the nails. Here’s a thorough tutorial with excellent pictures.

Open Frames

Open frames can add a lot of interest to a gallery wall or above the fireplace. Take a trip to your local thrift shop and pick up 3 or 4 frames of varying sizes you like. They don’t have to be the same color. You can use spray paint to make them uniform. Add a little distressing to the wood by using steel wool on the corners.

Mason Jars

Mason jars are one of the most versatile items for decorating and are perfect for DIY projects. They can hold candles, silverware, toothbrushes, pens, and more. To make a simple yet elegant flower vase, wrap ribbon around the center and adhere using hot glue. For fall decor, decoupage plastic leaves to the exterior and place a tea-light candle inside. Mason jars have endless decorating possibilities!

Repurpose Old Things

An old dresser can look new with a fresh coat of paint and be used as a buffet. A broken chair can become a planter in your garden. And an antique window pane can become a coat rack. Check out this amazing table transformation using an old banquet table, wood and a lot of hard work!
