Eiteljorg Museum
Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art is located in the middle of downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. It sits just steps off of the Indianapolis Canal Walk and just a hop, skip, and jump from the White River.
Its location within the city’s downtown section makes it a must-visit among the area’s many must-see stops. That includes the Indianapolis Zoo, the NCAA Hall of Champions, and Military Park among others.
The Eiteljorg Museum boasts a beautifully curated collection of Western and Native American art from prominent artists. Including Andy Warhol, T.C. Cannon, N. C. Wyeth, Georgia O’Keeffe, Allan Houser, Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, and Kay WalkingStick. An outstanding group of artists that any museum would love to call home, let alone one founded in 1989.
The Expansion
Eiteljorg expanded its footprint in 2005 by opening a large addition that doubled its available public space. With this expansion, they added three new galleries, including two primarily dedicated to its incredible collection of contemporary art. The third gallery, the Gund Gallery of Western Art, is home to a 57-piece collection donated by the family of George Gund.
The museum is packed to the brim with amazing and beautiful works of art celebrating the Native American culture. The Eiteljorg Museum not only claims an amazing collection, but it is also the only museum of its kind in the Midwest region and one of only a few in the country that offers such a collection.
Eiteljorg’s unique collection of art and its fantastic programs make it a truly unique museum and experience for visitors. Its Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship is awarded biennially to celebrate today’s most prevalent and innovative Native American artists. The Fellowship has been awarded to artists from a wide range of disciplines, including painters, sculptors, photographers, new media artists, and installation artists.
